Working with, and Enhancing the Safety of Those Victimized by Violence, Through Victim-Centered Interviewing

Content: In an attempt to enhance the safety of those victimized by offenders, probation officers are increasingly interacting with those victimized. This session will address signs of secondary trauma that could result from hearing traumatic stories. Suggestions for dealing with our own trauma and that of the person who was victimized will be discussed. Ways to help a traumatized individual and empower them will also be examined. Historical roles of probation/parole interviews will be examined to see how these practices may endanger those who have been victimized. Finally, some practical policies and interviewing skills will be discussed.

Probation Officers Working As Batterer Intervention Program Facilitators - What We Learn That Changes Our Work

Content: After many years as probation officers, and as supervisors, Jen Wright of Duluth MN, and Jim Henderson, of Ann Arbor MI, both decided to facilitate batterer intervention program classes. This webinar tells their stories: why they decided to facilitate, how their probation experience shaped their approach, and how BIP work has changed the way they see offenders, probation's role, and interagency organizing.

Protecting Victims through Community Supervision of Domestic Violence Offenders: Guidelines for Practice

Content: This workshop will introduce participants to the recently published, “Community Corrections’ Response to Domestic Violence: Guidelines for Practice,” developed by the American Probation and Parole Association (APPA) through funding from the Office on Violence Against Women. The workshop will provide an overview of the process to develop the 41 guidelines for supervising domestic violence offenders, highlight key guidelines, and offer tips for implementing the guidelines into daily practice.
Faculty: Carrie Abner is a Research Associate for the American Probation and Parole Association (APPA), where she currently directs national projects related to the prevention and response to corrections-based sexual abuse and community supervision of domestic violence offenders. Moderated by Jim Henderson, BWJP.

Offender Accountability: A System Perspective

Content: This session will explore how the CCR system can enhances or impedes the safety of those victimized by violence and holds offenders accountability. We will identify ways to enhance victim satisfaction with the criminal justice system. Lastly we will examine some creative sanctions and Identify new tools for managing offenders.
Faculty: Jim Henderson is a technical assistance provider for the US Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women, through the Battered Women’s Justice Project. In addiction he provides intervention to men who have engaged in violence against intimate partners. He worked for 17 yrs as a probation officers supervising domestic violence and stalking offenders.
